farida from Auckland tries out Concept 10 10

A revolutionary concept in fitness that scores a ten

By Farida Master

The timing was perfect!  Having just returned from an eat, pray, eat holiday where most days started with a sumptuous breakfast spread and ended with lavish dinner parties, I needed to get rid of those extra layers of lard, that were beginning to weigh me down. So when one of my colleagues suggested I try the unique Concept 10 10 fitness regime that required a high intensity workout just once a week for twenty minutes, I was more than happy to sweat it out for a good story!

Nestled in a villa at 9 Morgan street, Newmarket, Concept 10 10 has a refreshingly different feel to it. What instantly attracts the eye is the symphony of colour and contemporary design as fern green and charcoal black colour scheme dominates the well designed fitness studio housed on two levels Whether it is the look, philosophy or concept, this fitness regime breaks away from stereotypical.

On day one, Jennifer, a cheerful trainer, leads me to the colour coordinated  private exercise studio and gives me an introductory overview of  the custom-made equipment that works on the lower back, legs, shoulders, chest, arms abdomen and neck muscles. She explains how I need to push really slowly as she straps me on and calibrates the weights accordingly. This is where the concept of pushing 10 seconds in either direction comes to play. The idea being that the workout induces muscle damage, a combination of micro-tears in the muscle fibres, which the body gradually works on healing, making your muscles stronger and leaner.

As I feel the pain the following day, I realise how the intensive workout has worked every muscle in my body to the limit. A limit that stretches with every session, I soon discover as Mike my trainer for the next week takes me through the paces with professional ease, encouraging me to push boundaries. Mike, a fourth year student of  physiotherapy, prompts me to take in deep breaths and reminds me to give it all I’ve got since it’s my only twenty minute workout for the entire week. What also helps is the undivided attention of a personal trainer monitoring every move you make–that too without paying a fat fee! You don’t even have to share the machine with anyone else whilst you are there! The one-on-one appointments are fixed accordingly from 6am to 8pm.

Concept 10 10s best testimonial is owner Melissa Smit herself, apart from her svelte mother Marie of course! Looking at the well toned director of Concept 10 10 who radiates pure energy, it’s difficult to imagine that Melissa was involved in two, near-death car accidents that severely damaged her lower vertebrae. Tired of living with excruciating pain, the livewire who is a qualified architect had almost given up hope till she was introduced to Concept 10 10 in Abu Dhabi where she lived with her husband. Thrilled with her miraculous recovery, she decided to bring the revolutionary concept that is the combination of 25 years of scientific research to New Zealand.  A fitting beginning to a fitness regime that is now going strong!

Concept 10 10 offers three packages of 10, 25 and 50 sessions.
