The timing was perfect! Having just returned from an eat, pray, eat holiday where most days started with a sumptuous breakfast spread and ended with lavish dinner parties, I needed to get rid of those extra layers of lard, that were beginning to weigh me down. So when one of my colleagues suggested I try the unique Concept 10 10 fitness regime that required a high intensity workout just once a week for twenty minutes, I was more than happy to sweat it out for a good story!

On day one, Jennifer, a cheerful trainer, leads me to the colour coordinated private exercise studio and gives me an introductory overview of the custom-made equipment that works on the lower back, legs, shoulders, chest, arms abdomen and neck muscles. She explains how I need to push really slowly as she straps me on and calibrates the weights accordingly. This is where the concept of pushing 10 seconds in either direction comes to play. The idea being that the workout induces muscle damage, a combination of micro-tears in the muscle fibres, which the body gradually works on healing, making your muscles stronger and leaner.
As I feel the pain the following day, I realise how the intensive workout has worked every muscle in my body to the limit. A limit that stretches with every session, I soon discover as Mike my trainer for the next week takes me through the paces with professional ease, encouraging me to push boundaries. Mike, a fourth year student of physiotherapy, prompts me to take in deep breaths and reminds me to give it all I’ve got since it’s my only twenty minute workout for the entire week. What also helps is the undivided attention of a personal trainer monitoring every move you make–that too without paying a fat fee! You don’t even have to share the machine with anyone else whilst you are there! The one-on-one appointments are fixed accordingly from 6am to 8pm.
